Petition Delivered to Nicola Sturgeon MSP
A petition signed by 1,000 people opposed to gay marriage has been presented to Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.
Representatives from the Knights of St Columba handed it to the MSP for Glasgow Southside at her surgery.
More than 50,000 responses to the Scottish government's consultation on the issue are being considered.
The government has previously said it "tended towards the initial view" that same-sex marriage should be introduced.
This latest petition was organised in the Southside of Glasgow by the local Knights of St Columba Council.
They said they gathered the signatures from five local Catholic churches in Ms Sturgeon's constituency last weekend.
They presented them to the SNP deputy leader at her weekend surgery in Govan along with senior members of the local Muslim community, who also support the status quo in respect to the law on Marriage.
Provincial Secretary Brother Brian Henry said: "We don't see any reason for a change in the law. The Sanctity of Marriage is one of our sacraments within the Catholic Church and that is something that we, as a faith, hold very strongly to.
Under current legislation civil partnerships give same sex couples the same legal rights as married couples therefore we see no need to change the present legislation"
The MSP stated that she would give serious consideration to the views expressed by her constituents in the petition.

The Opportunity to Serve
The New Evangelisation - A Call to Serve
The Knights of St Columba offer ‘The Opportunity to Serve’
For nearly a century the Knights of St Columba have answered the call of our faith whenever the need has arisen through ’Serving God by Serving Others’. Today the need is greater than ever
In September 2010, The Holy Father called us all to be New Evangelists at a time when profound poverty of spirit and faith exists in our countries. The Knights of St Columba have answered this call, and at the end of October this year will be launching nationally its initiative ‘The Opportunity to Serve’.
As members of the Lay Apostolate we seek and invite more Catholic men to accept:
· The Opportunity to join in the New Evangelisation and help spread God’s word and praise His name.
· The Opportunity to assist our parishes and clergy
· The Opportunity to safeguard the interests of Catholic youth
· The Opportunity to promote and work for Pro Life Issues
· The Opportunity to help those less fortunate than ourselves
· The Opportunity to ‘Serve God by Serving Others
This Opportunity is open to YOU today.
This initiative is supported by the Rt Rev Malcolm McMahon OP, Bishop of Nottingham and Ecclesiastical Advisor to the Knights of Saint Columba.
Fully supported by the Bishops of Scotland, England and Wales
